The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia has launched the program of Merdeka Learning Episode Twenty, on Teaching Practitioners on Friday 3, June 2022. This program is in accordance with the direction of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo as conveyed on various occasions that encourage and support the transformative efforts of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology.
“I ask higher education to facilitate students to develop their talents. Give students the opportunity to learn from anyone, anywhere. Learn from the industrial world, the banking world is welcome. Studying outside the campus world will be very good, in accordance with what the Minister of Education and Technology has often said about the Merdeka Campus and also the Freedom of Learning," said the President of the Republic of Indonesia in the video that was shown at the launch of Merdeka Learning Episode Twenty: Teaching Practitioners in Jakarta, Friday, (3/6 )
In line with this directive, the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Anwar made a new breakthrough to ensure students and lecturers to collaborate with practitioners in Indonesia. Indonesian universities must transform, must move faster in order to compete at the world level.
Furthermore, Nadim Makarim stated, there are still considerable challenges in our higher education system, particularly with regard to the level of readiness of university graduates to enter the world of work. "This is actually a problem that has been going on for a long time. Now we are actually taking concrete steps to address it," said Minister Nadiem
Along with the rapid development of the global world, universities (PT) in Indonesia must move faster in order to be able to compete with other countries. In order to answer these challenges, the Teaching Practitioner program is present as a solution that supports the transformation of the higher education system.
With the presence of practitioners who teach on campus, the involvement of practitioners in planning and the learning process can take place more optimally. Lecturers will gain the latest knowledge about the industrial world and students can meet face to face with practitioners.
In an effort to accelerate the improvement of the quality of education, the Ministry of Education and Culture encourages universities to refer to the 8 (eight) Main Performance Indexes which is abbreviated as IKU. IKU is a new performance measure for universities to create adaptive universities based on more concrete outcomes.
Specifically, this Teaching Practitioner program focuses on achieving IKU number 4 (four) and number 7 (seven). Referring to IKU number 4, the practitioners also teach on campus. Practitioners are involved in course planning, so that later lecturers in Indonesia will gain the latest knowledge about the industrial world. In addition, students can also interact directly with practitioners who are experienced in their respective fields.
Meanwhile, in IKU number 7, which is a collaborative and participatory class, where there is a change in the student learning system. With practitioners teaching on campus, it is hoped that they will use the case study teaching method and base learning projects. So they work on real projects in the field. Or at least with a case study, they analyze real cases in the industrial world,” emphasized the Minister of Education and Culture.
Nadiem explained simply that in the Merdeka Campus program, students were sent off campus to gain work experience, while in the Teaching Practitioner program, experts in the industry came to campus to share their practical experiences.
“We want practitioners who are great in the industrial world to come to campus and share their knowledge with students and lecturers. Through collaboration between practitioners and lecturers, we also want to present a more collaborative and participatory learning space,” said Nadiem.
"I invite all universities and all practitioners who are competent in various industrial fields to be involved in the Teaching Practitioner program," said Nadiem.
"With real collaboration between universities and the industrial world, I believe we can lead the recovery of the world and move together to realize the Freedom of Learning," he said.
According to the analysis, there are 13.4 million expert practitioners in Indonesia based on data from the International Labor Organization. And about 50% of teaching experts who are interested in the world of teaching on campus to collaborate between universities, lecturers, and practitioners in the classroom. This is encouraging news and fosters optimism from the ministry, because it turns out that the spirit of giving back knowledge to the younger generation in the industrial sector is very large and this is the hope of this program to explore the potential of practitioners to contribute to the next generation.
