Woven fabric is any textile formed by weaving, which is the process of making woven goods (fabric) from the crossing of two sets of threads by inserting the weft threads transversely into the warp threads (warp threads).
Woven cloth is one of the traditional fabrics that has been designated as an intangible cultural heritage by the Ministry of Education and culture. Besides having historical value as a cultural heritage that must be preserved, weaving also has an aesthetic value that is not inferior to other types of fabrics.
In East Java, Indonesia, there are ikat weaving centers that still exist today. Precisely located in the village of Bandar Kidul, District Mojoroto, Kediri City, East Java province, Indonesia. Among the weaving crafts that have succeeded in developing is the Medali Mas ikat weaving belonging to Munawar and his wife Rukayah which is located on Jl. KH. Agus Salim, Gang VIII, No. 54 C, the business was initiated on February 27, 1989.
Starting from a home-based business, from only having two ikat weaving machines with four workers, over time now it has 60 ikat weaving machines and 115 workers. Medal Mas ikat weaving, which is now 33 years old, was able to grow and become one of the leading SMEs in the city of Kediri. Even though it was stumbling at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, with persistence the owner was able to take blessings from the pandemic with the production of masks.
The success of this effort is shown by the achievements from the local and national levels that have been achieved. That is:
- Certificate from the social, labor and transmigration office (Dinsosnakertrans).
This work unit in charge of manpower appointed Medal Mas as a training instructor for weaving development in the activities of fostering people with social welfare problems. The event was held from September 5 to October 8, 2011.
- Received the Upakarti award in the 2010 Pioneering category.
- Received UKM Award Parasanya Kerta Nugraha 2008.
- The best nomination for the individual category of the poverty reduction work competition (pro poor) award from the governor of East Java 2012.
The process of making ikat weaving through 14 stages and all done traditionally. There are 3 types of woven fabrics, namely cotton, semi-silk and silk. The products produced are not only in the form of cloth for clothing, but also goyor sarongs, scarves, bags, shoes, wallets and hats. Prices for fabrics sold vary, ranging from cotton fabrics with a price range of Rp. 200,000, semi silk Rp. 400,000, Silk Rp. 600,000. Meanwhile, sarongs start from Rp. 200,000 to Rp. 300,000. For marketing, besides being marketed at his outlets, it is also done online through online shops and social media such as Facebook and Instagram
Rukayah's Medal Mas Shop is never empty of visitors. On a typical day, he and his employees produce about 70 pieces of cloth every day. It's different when certain days such as holidays, of course, he spurs more production. Likewise when you get orders in large quantities. This shop has proven that the modernization trend that has given birth to all kinds of modern batik fabrics using sophisticated machines has not shifted the position of the woven fabric from Bandar Kidul Mojoroto, Kediri. In one month the turnover of this business can reach Rp. 350,000,000
To meet the demands of some customers, Rukayah also provides sewing services for those who want it and also available ready-made clothes from woven fabrics. As a form of innovation from his business, he continues to update his batik with new motifs, to attract customers' interest. Even consumers can also choose the desired motif and color by pre-ordering. This is all done for the sake of pampering its customers.
Even a recent breakthrough has been successfully carried out. In January 2022, through the government of the city of Kediri, Tenun Ikat Medali Mas collaborated with the Mathematics Education Program Student Association (Himaptika) Universitas Nusantara PGRI (UNP) Kediri to launch a mathematical motif. With the motif that describes the reflection of the geometric transformation by incorporating mathematical elements such as squares, addition, subtraction and multiplication signs, it enriches Munawar and his wife's Medal Mas weaving motif.
With the success in cooperation and producing the mathematical motifs mentioned above, it further demonstrates the ability and existence of Medal Mas and is ready to cooperate with parties who have the same interest in this field and produce new motifs that are unique and exclusive.
